Windows & doors and Glasgow homes
Glasgow is a city of red and blond sandstone tenements, from the West End and Southside to Dennistoun, alongside interwar cottage flats, post-war council schemes on the edges of the city and a fair number of high-rise flats.
- In tenement flats, the look of the windows can affect the whole building. Some factors or title deeds specify the style or colour, and sash-and-case windows are common in older blocks.
- Older stone houses often have deep window reveals and timber sash windows. It's worth asking whether repair and draught-proofing is an option as well as replacement.
- In ex-council flats, the housing association or council may still own some neighbouring flats, and a factor may set rules for windows and doors in shared closes.
- In multi-storey flats, windows are usually the landlord's or factor's responsibility. Check before getting quotes.
- In conservation areas and listed buildings, replacing windows or doors usually needs planning permission or listed building consent from Glasgow City Council.
Areas covered include West End, Southside, Merchant City, Dennistoun, Shawlands, Partick, Govan, Springburn, Easterhouse, Knightswood, Pollokshields, Cathcart. Local authority: Glasgow City Council.

How it works
- Tell us the job. Give a short description, your postcode and roughly when.
- We pass it to one local tradesperson who covers your area and does that kind of work. We pick one, not five, so your phone won't ring all day.
- They contact you to arrange a visit or a quote. You decide whether to go ahead.
To be upfront about what we are: we're an independent quote-request service, not a trade company. We don't vet, insure or guarantee anyone's work, so always get a written quote and check the registrations that apply to your job.
Questions
Does it cost me anything?
No. It's free for homeowners and tenants. Some tradespeople pay us a small fee for an introduction.
How many people will contact me?
One. We share your request with one local tradesperson only. If they can't help, we'll ask you before passing it to anyone else.
Which areas do you cover?
Glasgow (G1–G5, G11–G15, G20–G23, G31–G34, G40–G46, G51–G53), including Southside, Merchant City, Dennistoun, Shawlands, Partick, Govan. If we can't find someone suitable, we'll tell you honestly.
Do you check the tradespeople?
We only pass jobs to businesses with a public address or trading history, but we're not an accreditation scheme. For gas work, check the Gas Safe Register. For electrics, check SELECT, NICEIC or NAPIT. Glasgow City Council Trading Standards can also advise on dealing with traders.
